The Sac and Fox Overlook Area was purchased through a cooperative effort between the Hardin County Greenbelt Chapter of Pheasants Forever and the Hardin County Conservation Board. The 132 acres in this parcel consists of beautiful bluffs overlooking the scenic Iowa River valley, a 9.6-acre wetland, prairie, and woodland.

Various lengths of canoe float trips are possible on the Iowa River through Hardin County. Plan your trip taking into consideration the weather and the water level. Be sure your equipment is well packed and waterproof. Keep alert for obstructions and cross fences; do not trespass Use marked county controlled areas.

The Iowa River Greenbelt through Hardin County is an area particularly rich in history and scenery. Many visitors and residents enjoy a leisurely, remote wilderness experience in the midst of this rich agricultural area.

The Iowa River Greenbelt in Hardin County is noted for its display of leaf color during the normal fall season. Generally reaching its peak around October 10, this spectacle is viewed by thousands each fall. A marked Scenic Trail has been established extending from Iowa Falls to Eldora through the Greenbelt.

The scenic drive is one way to enjoy the area from the comfort of your own car. If you are looking for a quiet afternoon away from it all or just looking for a pleasant alternative to the main highways, the Iowa River Greenbelt Scenic Drive is a special experience.

Just get on the route anywhere and follow the signs to the north or south. You'll be glad you did.



Shower and restroom facilities at Daisy Long Park

Daisy Long Memorial Park east of Union as the original site of the first water powered gristmill built in 1856 with some of the old foundation still remaining. C.F. and Daisy V. long donated the 7-acre park to the Hardin County Conservation Board in 1963. Dr. Lloyd Bates and his wife Rosa donated a 7-acre addition to the Hardin County Conservation Board in 1999. This historical yet unique area offers camping, fishing, and picnicking. The park consists of electrical outlets for 40 campsites, with primitive camping sites also available, a shelter house, modern restroom/shower facility, dump station and boat ramp.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources purchased this 131.9-acre area in 1977 from the Iowa River Conservation and imporvement Club. The area is managed by the Hardin County Conservation Board and is located on the west bank of the Iowa River across from Steamboat Rock. The park includes an 8-acre artificial lake, a rifle range with 25, 50, 100, and 200-yard distances. A large camping area provides electrical outlets to service over 40 campers. Primitive sites are also available. There are toilet and shower facilities, water, and enlcosed shelter house, and boat ramp.
